Dubliner Duo

Irish eyes are smiling on Lower Greenville Avenue these days. Irishmen Peter Kenny and Feargal McKinney are living the dream of many of their Irish brethren: They own their own pub (next to Terilliís).

After only two weeks in business Peter, Feargal and their new pub, The Dubliner, are gaining fame for serving Guinness beer with a clover outlined in the foam.

Touch of Ireland

Irish, English and French expatriates and Dallasites who like to drink without attitude have already called the Dubliner their home. Housed in the old Tipperary Inn space on Greenville, the month-old pub earns its name. It offers Irish beer, Irish tunes on the jukebox (House of Pain, Van Morrison, the Pogues and Sinead OíConnor) and, believe it or not, Irish Spring soap in the bathrooms.

Charming owners / bartenders Peter Kenny and Feargal McKinney come by their pubís moniker the old-fashioned way ñ the two are actually from Dublin.

If you went to Ireland you couldn't find a more Irish looking establishment. This small, cozy Irish pub pours an exceptional pint o'Guiness and offers tons o'Irish character. Great jukebox and lively crowds.

Best Irish Bar: The Dubliner

This is the anti-meat market bar on Greenville Avenue. The black-and-tans are excellent, as are the deli sandwiches. What else can we say? Do you want dumb jokes about Blarney Stones and Lucky Charms? Forget it, we're not into that kind of exploitation. This is a great casual watering hole where you can concentrate on what Irish pubs are all about: drinking until the road rises up to meet you at 2 o'clock in the morning. OK, so we're weak.

DALLAS: The Dubliner. Owned and operated by Dublin natives, The Dubliner has earned a reputation as the best Irish bar in Dallas. The authentically cozy pub is a haven for fans of Irish whiskeys, stouts, porters, and ciders.

Best Pub

The Dubliner is about as authentic an Irish pub as youíre going to find this side of the Pond. The lower Greenville bar is small, intimate, and crowded on weekends, mostly with regulars. Real pubs always have regulars. Owned and operated by two blokes from Dublin, this haven for Guinness lovers (whiskey, too) has a fireplace in the corner, a stellar jukebox, and Irish newspapers to keep up with the news back home.

Europe Without Leaving Home: The Dubliner Irish Pub (by Mike Daniel)

ATMOSPHERE: The pub is genuinely tiny (occupancy 80) and sufficiently Gaelic, with a modest brass-trimmed bar, pedestrian table seating and a generous dollop of British Isles bar kitsch. Darts are an option, as is English and Scottish football (soccer to us Yanks) on the telly. Even the jukebox holds mostly Irish pop-rock tunes. Another European passion ñ smoking ñ is downright encouraged, so stay away if youíre sensitive.

WHAT YOU'LL FIND: Plenty of Irish and English draught brews such as Harp, Bass, Newcastle, Boddingtons and the omnipresent Guinness. They even have Woodpecker (Hard) Cider on tap. Bottled libations include U.K. beers, ciders, fruit beers and an impressive single-malt Scotch stock. Even Irish coffee is available. Highlights of the small sandwich menu are the roast beef and the Welsh rarebit.

BE SURE TO TRY: The two sandwiches mentioned above, as well as any draft offering, especially Guinness and Murphyís. Sweet tooths should sample the Woodpecker or a Chocolate Truffle (Murphyís Stout mixed with Lindemans Framboise, a Belgian raspberry beer); the strong of constitution might opt for the Priestís Collar (dry Blackthorn Cider with Guinness on top).

PEOPLE BEHIND THE PLACE: Owners Peter Kenny and Feargal McKinney are both Dublin natives and among the jolliest, wittiest and friendliest barkeeps this side of the Emerald Isle. The site held the late, great Tipperary Inn before it moved to Skillman at La Vista in 1994. The duo also runs the Old Monk on Henderson Avenue.

BEST TIMES TO GO: Monday through Wednesday evenings, if youíre not fond of crowds. Squadrons of SMU students invade on weekends.

Pub/Brewery Reviews (by David Starr)

This isn't just a bar, it's a gathering place. On any evening there'll bikes, from Vespa's, to very old BMW's, to Harley's parked in front & lots of folks bring their dogs right in..... Good selection of single malts, good beer, just a good place to hang out for a while. Definitely not pretentious. This is the kind of place that can be a regular stop.

It's elbow room only at this pub so watch your toes. There's plenty o'whiskey and beer if a boilermaker is what you have in mind. Best if used separately. Dress Code: Casual
